Compared to Ronan and Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2’s main villains – Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) and Taserface (Chris Sullivan) – are much less focused on destroying entire worlds.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy was audiences’ first major introductions to Thanos, a Marvel villain so big that the MCU has been building him up for half a decade. Director James Gunn took a different approach for his second go-around; there’s no Thanos in Vol. 2, and the main bad guys have relatively small-scale motivations for acting villainous. That’s all to service the MCU superheroes and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has no qualms about that.
