Last summer AMC delivered the long-awaited adaptation of Garth Ennis and the late Steve Dillon’s Vertigo comic book series Preacher. Adapted by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and executive produced by Breaking Bad‘s Sam Catlin, the series took a unique approach to translating the graphic nature of the graphic novel to cable television, delivering an increasingly weird and darkly funny take on the material. Working its way through season 1, the series stayed true to many of the main characters, but also felt free to dramatically alter the narrative to better suit the dramatic needs of a television series.
As it turns out, those needs has more to do with establishing the characters of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga), and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) within the context of the small Texas town of Annville than they did being a direct adaptation of Ennis and Dillon’s books. …
