A 16-year-old teen faces a second-degree murder charge in the stabbing death of another teen Thursday, in Durham Region’s first homicide of 2018.
The teen charged — who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — is from Oshawa. Police responded to the call around 3 a.m. near Harmony and Taunton Rds. According to witnesses, the two teens were “involved in a verbal altercation, which led to the victim being stabbed,” police said.
The suspect fled the scene and was arrested at a nearby house.
The victim has been identified as Neveithan Baskaran, 17, from Oshawa.
Police continue to hold the scene as they look for evidence.
Investigators are still urging witnesses who were at the scene during this fatal stabbing to come forward and speak to investigators.
