BOONDOGGLES IN THE MAKING
One question: When does the “Grannie” state stop raising the kids? We have subsidized daycare, subsidized sports programs, all-day kindergarten, breakfast programs, enhanced child tax credits, and 18-month parental leave. Now it’ll be free daycare until the child is ready for all-day kindergarten. I’m all for social assistance, but why should we pay for a doctor’s babysitting fees? Why is a person a child until they are 25 and entitled to free prescriptions? Have they not been drinking and voting and driving for some years by then? This is all of our money being thrown at problems without a plan in place. If you open free daycare, you will get 100% enrollment without the capacity to house them. These will all be boondoggles. Please, let’s stop the madness.

IT TOOK SOME TIME
Why has it taken most of my 74 years to become so cynical of politics? One politician after being in government for many years makes a myriad of promises on the eve of an election. Another claims he will put money in my pocket. Can you blame me if I only believe that when I feel that money “jingling in my pocket”?

A NATION TO CELEBRATE
Re: “Canadians sick and tired of nasty liberal identity politics” (Candice Malcolm, March 31): Like almost all white Canadians, I celebrate our multi-ethnic makeup, and the vibrancy and character it brings to Canada, one of several of the most envied nations on Earth. (BTW, indigenous Canadians will always be our premier citizens.) Yet we didn’t arrive at this status by accident. Contrary to what our basically well-meaning but intellectually challenged PM believes, that Canada is an unrooted postmodern culture, we are in fact a deeply rooted, centuries-old Judeo-Christian culture that vigilantly defends each citizen’s fundamental freedoms. So it is more than maddening to witness our federal government and PM trying to set Canadians against one another, and talking down Canada, in of all places, the United Nations. If any further proof is required of our actual cultural heritage, this week we mark the 50th anniversary of the tragic slaying of the most heralded person of colour in modern Western history, the aptly named “Martin Luther” King.

COULD BE A FIASCO IN THE MAKING
Re: “Come to your senses” (Letters to the Editor, April 1): I, too, have my doubts about the electorate in Ontario, especially in the 416 area. Everyone knows that what Wynne is promising isn’t doable and most of the promises will be broken if the Libs win a majority again. If they have a minority and enlist the NDP for help, OMG! That will be a fiasco. Ford has a lot of work to do and he had better not pull a Hudak this time or all is lost.
