WARMINGTON: Get tough on crime or start handing out bulletproof vests

When kids need bulletproof vests in the playground you have to admit there’s a huge problem.

Not just because two girls, ages five and nine, were struck by gunfire.

Not just because a police officer was recently shot. Not just because there’s been eight murders in the past dozen days. Not just because shootings are up 20%.

And not because Toronto is on course for a record number of homicides.

We have a huge problem when our victims, and our alleged killers, are just kids.

A new low came Friday when Toronto Police charged a 13-year-old with first-degree murder in last Saturday’s ruthless stalking, running down, assaulting and stabbing murder of 19-year-old Aaron Rankine-Wright who was riding his bike in Little Portugal.

So far in 2018 Toronto has seen 41 homicides. And the killers don’t care if its happens in a playground, in Yonge-Dundas Square or at a bowling alley.

It’s repugnant. We can’t tolerate it. It’s out of control. It’s mayhem. It can happen anywhere at anytime to anybody. If there is one shooting, there is soon after another. It’s all out war and it’s all about drugs, turf and money.

The time for action is now. The era of political speak, political correctness and political partisanship is over.

“It is unacceptable,” said Mayor John Tory. “We need to take as aggressive action as can possibility be taken.”

Chief Mark Saunders added the sentiment that this incident was “cowardly.”

They are right but we have heard all of those words before. So have the gangsters. This is why Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack tweeted “it’s time for leadership” to stop the insanity.

It was called opportunism but what he tweeted was the truth. The truth hurts. That police are not allowed to properly conduct street checks is a deadly truth. It means they don’t have the same street intelligence they once enjoyed. It gives the bad guys a real advantage.

Time to take that back.

Incoming Premier Doug Ford was on the money when he said “this can’t happen again ever again” and added “once these thugs get caught, lock them up for a long time.”

It’s time for something new. Time for something the gangs are not expecting.

Crush them. Crush them now. Treat the gangs like the vermin they are. Take away their guns, drugs, cars, phones, jewellery, knives and bank accounts. Take away their freedom. Show no mercy. Show them who’s boss.

Get a funded snitch program and proper witness relocation program. Give police all the tools they need. Don’t be pressured by activists. It’s not about race. It’s about everybody — everybody’s safety.

Fix this in the memory of the slain like Vivi Leimonis, Jane Creba, Chantal Dunn, Breanna Davy, Shyanne Charles, Joshua Yassa, St. Aubyn Rodney, Tyson Bailey, Jarvis Montague, Ephraim Brown, Ariela Navarro-Fenoy, Bailey Zaveda, John O’Keefe, Lecent Ross, Naveed Shahnawaz, Dameion McFarland, Candice Rochelle Bobb as well as her baby Kyrie, and Ruma Amar.

Do it for the innocent wounded like Tamara Carter, Shaquan Cadougan, Barbara Turnbull, Louise Russo and the sisters shot Thursday in Scarborough.

Stand up for the innocent people being terrorized. Stand up for our children.

Although it did not come across in the mayor’s news conference — which quickly morphed into bike safety — Tory is angry. I talked with him afterward and sensed how upset he is.

( function() { pnLoadVideo( “videos”, “fHqYLNpVqXM”, “pn_video_894767”, “”, “”, [] ); } )();

Tory admitted he perhaps should have “had two separate news conferences” but made up for it later by going up to the Alton Towers Circle neighbourhood, where the bullet holes are still in the fence and many kids were left traumatized.

“Enough is enough,” Tory told me.

Unless he wants to put handing out bulletproof vests at our playgrounds into the budget, it better be.
