IT’S ALL ON YOU SCHEER
With Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland trying to save our position in the trade pact formerly known as NAFTA, I can’t help thinking of the famous line from the movie The Godfather: “Luca Brasi held a gun to his head, and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract.” It’s foolish for us to think we have anything left to bargain in this deal. Freeland should just sign the deal and forget about trying to “stand up to Trump.” Trudeau and company had their chance to negotiate a trade deal that would benefit Canada, but they blew it in favour of an agenda that has absolutely no place in an international trade agreement. God save us all from the incompetent government we have in Ottawa. I’ll be so happy to see October 2019 come around. I just hope that Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives can get their act together by then, otherwise the Conservative Party might as well disband. Maxime Bernier just might see his current party-of-one become the new home for conservatives in Canada, after all. I always joke about Hillary Clinton’s loss as the answer to the question: “So, just how bad a candidate do you have to be to lose to Donald Trump?” Andrew Scheer just might earn the same honour if he fails to defeat Trudeau in the next election. No pressure, Andrew, no pressure.
(In spite of his government’s many incompetencies, it is still very difficult to knock out an incumbent. And remember that governments lose, opposition parties don’t win)
FUTURE MOLE PEOPLE
A third straight month of 30C-plus degrees and no one’s worried. Nothing to see here, folks. Happens all the time — this is India, after all, right? Our grandchildren will be living underground like moles. Hopefully, I won’t be around to have to explain why we did nothing while the planet warned us over and over again.
(That’s a bit over the top)
CONSERVATIVE VS. LIBERAL
I have had the unfortunate turn of events to have needed to be hospitalized for a week. Fortunately, I was in the excellent care of the good people at Ajax hospital. During my stay, I was able to read both daily newspapers and watch a lot of TV. News coverage on various topics. Thus this has allowed me to come to this conclusion: A person of liberal thinking that is watching TV, and a program comes on that offends them in some way, will react by protesting, writing letters, signing petitions, belittling others who enjoy such program and other programs of the same ilk. Whereas a person of conservative thinking will just change the channel.
(Summed up rather nicely, and kudos to the medical professionals for the care you received)
OH, THE IRONY
I appreciated the cover photo of the Aug. 30 edition. It was a masterful representation of the U.S. president and his inability to accept personal responsibility and to deflect blame on to those around him. At first I thought you were casting derision on our prime minister during complex international negotiations but then I realized the irony that you were expressing.
(Glad it wasn’t lost on you)
