Many superheroes have been around for several decades and the same thing goes for the Guardians of the Galaxy. The team first appeared in 1969 in Marvel Super-Heroes #18.
The original team was created by Stan Lee, Arnold Drake, and Roy Thomas, but there have been several different versions of the team throughout the years.
While the Guardians have been around for a while, the new movies are based on the 2008 version of the team written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
The Guardians may have not been as popular as some of the other superheroes, yet they still got their own movie in 2014 which opened with rave reviews. A sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, was released in 2017 which got mixed reviews at the box office.
Both movies star Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Dave Bautista (Drax), as well as voice actors Bradley Cooper (Rocket) and Vin Diesel (Groot). Also, both movies had James Gunn as the director who had previously directed movies such as Slither and Super.
Guardians of the Galaxy was not a guaranteed success at the box office, but the quirky team seemed to pay off for Disney. Even though the second movie didn’t win over fans as much as the first one did, a third movie was expected to be made to finish out the trilogy.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been in the news a lot recently after the firing of James Gunn, which means there are also a lot of rumors about the movie.
With that said, here are the 10 Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Rumors We Hope Are True (And 10 We Hope Aren’t).
20 Hope Is True: A Deadpool Crossover Could Happen
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, superheroes often find themselves in movies that they don’t necessarily belong in.
Crossover films have even been released most notably the Avengers movies, which team up several of the important heroes. Even though there are many characters under the Marvel brand, Disney isn’t able to use all of the characters due to rights issues.
Before Disney bought the company out, 20th Century Fox had owned several key superhero characters, which means that theoretically, a Deadpool and Guardians crossover could happen at some point.
James Gunn and Ryan Reynolds even joked on Twitter about a crossover and even though it is unlikely to ever happen, it would be quite a spectacle to see on the big screen.
19 Hope Isn’t: The Movie Is Canceled
There has been a lot of drama surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as of late.
With the firing of James Gunn, there has been fan outcry for Disney to rehire him as director. Disney hasn’t budged yet, and the production for the Guardians’ third outing is on indefinite hold.
When a movie is put on indefinite hold, it can sometimes mean that the movie will never see the light of day.
While the film hasn’t been confirmed to have been canceled, some may worry that Disney will just decide to cut their losses and move on with a different project.
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have been a fun and different take on superhero films, so let’s hope that this stays only a rumor.
18 Hope Is True: Adam Warlock Will Be A Main Character
Fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the introduction of the character Adam Warlock but so far fans have only gotten teases of the characters in previous movies.
Warlock was originally supposed to play a bigger role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but was dropped since it was believed that the film would have too many characters.
Fans were then expecting him for Avengers: Infinity War, but again did not make an appearance.
Adam Warlock plays a big role in the Infinity War comic storyline, so it would be surprising if the character didn’t show up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Kevin Feige has also teased that Vol. 3 will start the next decade of films, and including Adam Warlock could be just the way to do it.
17 Hope Isn’t: Jennifer Lawrence As She-Groot
Groot is no doubt a fan-favorite member of the Guardians of the Galaxy team.
He was shown as one of the strongest in the first movie and one of the cutest in the second film, since he was now Baby Groot.
Back in 2016, a fan casting was going around indicating that Jennifer Lawrence should be cast as She-Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Lawrence responded to the fan casting saying that she liked the idea of her playing Groot.
While it would be interesting to see another Floral Colossus being in the movies, it may seem a bit over the top to have two characters who can only say the words “I,” “am,” and “Groot.”
16 Hope Is True: Mark Hamill Will Have A Role
Everyone who loves Star Wars knows who Mark Hamill is. While he has played Luke Skywalker since 1977, he has also been in an abundance of other iconic roles over his career.
One venture Hamill has never experienced, however, is a job in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Earlier this year, Hamill took to Twitter to announce his interest in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Gunn seemed equally as interested to have him be a part of the cast.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but with Hamill’s star power as well as his devotion to his characters, Hamill seems like he would be an excellent fit for a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
15 Hope Isn’t: A New Team Will Be Introduced
Over the past decade, Marvel has added several new characters to their superhero teams.
After the events in Infinity War, it is likely that even more new characters will be introduced and even replace older characters.
While the Avengers have already begun to undergo changes to its roster, some rumors are claiming that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the end of the Guardians as we know them.
When talking with Screen Rant, Gunn commented that Vol. 3 will be “the end of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy,” meaning that the third movie could set up a brand new team of Guardians.
With as many characters that are thought to be being replaced in the next phase, are fans really ready to not have Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot anymore?
14 Hope Is True: Fantastic Four Characters Could Be Introduced
While the Guardians of the Galaxy were a successful team when it came to box office success and critical praise, the Fantastic Four have not been.
There have been a few Fantastic Four adaptations over the years including films in 1994, 2005, and 2015.
None of these movies have done well with fans or critics, but now with The Walt Disney Company acquiring 20th Century Fox, the team could eventually be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
James Gunn had previously stated that he wanted to adapt the villain Annihilus and before that mentioned that they had to include Sakaaran instead of the Badoon because they didn’t have the rights to Badoon.
Now with Disney getting the rights to a lot more superheroes, it would be fascinating to see Fantastic Four characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
13 Hope Isn’t: Steven Tyler Will Join The Cast
It isn’t uncommon for celebrities to have cameos in popular movies. Sometimes these cameos can feel super out of place, such as Matt Damon in Thor: Ragnarok, but other times they add a brief joke to the movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 both have celebrity cameos, and if the pattern continues, Vol. 3 could go the same way.
Celebrities sometimes campaign for roles in popular movies which seems to have been happening a few years ago with Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler.
Tyler has previously expressed interest in having a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. His daughter Liv is already part of the MCU as Betty Ross, but her acting wasn’t anything spectacular.
Maybe the MCU doesn’t really need another Tyler right now.
12 Hope Is True: Gamora Will Have A Big Role
Marvel is notorious for ending characters in a movie and then bringing them back to life.
While Infinity War saw several key characters literally turn to ash, many of them are likely to return for future movies in one way or another.
Gamora, on the other hand, passed away before other Avengers since Thanos threw her off a cliff on Vormir in order to obtain the Soul Stone.
Before Infinity War was released, Gunn stated that Gamora had a significant role in the third Guardians movie.
Marvel has been increasing the focus on female characters, which has drawn more people into the box office, and bringing back Gamora for the third movie would no doubt make a lot of people thrilled.
11 Hope Isn’t: More Earth-Based Heroes Will Be Included
Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, has been one of the only Earth-based heroes featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
James Gunn had made a point to do this so that Quill seemed unique among the other species in the cosmos, but now it appears that this may no longer be the case.
When responding to post on Facebook, James Gunn said that “Human characters are no longer out of consideration.”
While there are other human superheroes in the MCU, Peter Quill has remained the only human member of the Guardians team, which is one of the reasons he is so unique in space.
Adding another Earth-based hero wouldn’t be the worst decision in MCU history, but it would certainly take away from Star-Lord’s character in Vol. 3.
10 Hope Is True: Disney Will Use James Gunn’s Script
After it was revealed that James Gunn had been fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, many things about the movie became uncertain.
The first two films were unique because of the way Gunn approached them and many people were unhappy with the thought of not having Gunn return.
While it seems as if Disney will not be rehiring Gunn, they may still be using his version of the script.
It has been revealed that Marvel will use Gunn’s script but allow the new director to make changes they feel are necessary.
While some people would like Disney to make the movie just the way Gunn had envisioned, having them use his script with minor changes is better than nothing.
9 Hope Isn’t: Guardians 3 Will Turn Into Thor 4
It was obvious in Avengers: Infinity War that Peter Quill was jealous of Thor.
Thor eventually teams up with Rocket and Groot later in the movie, and while Thor and the Guardians shared a good chemistry, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shouldn’t be turned into a completely different movie.
While Thor: Ragnarok did a decent job pleasing fans and critics, is a fourth Thor movie really necessary? No character in the MCU has gotten a fourth film so far, and given Thor’s track record, he probably shouldn’t be the one to get another movie.
Even if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gets a new director, many people would rather see another Guardians movie than Thor 4.
8 Hope Is True: Alan Tudyk Will Be A Villain
Alan Tudyk is no stranger to starring in Disney movies. He had voice acting roles for Moana, Zootopia, Big Hero 6, Frozen, and Wreck-It Ralph, as well as the live-action Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Even though he has been in several Disney projects, he has yet to be in a Marvel movie.
When interviewing Tudyk back in 2016, our own Rob Keyes asked him who he would like to play in a Marvel flick.
Tudyk responded by saying that he would like to play an “off-the-rails, insane person who succumbs to his own madness.”
There a very few actual details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and a villain hasn’t even been announced yet. Could Tudyk fill the role? Let’s hope so!
7 Hope Isn’t: Dave Bautista Won’t Return
Many fans and actors were outraged when James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That being said, nobody has been quite as vocal on the issue as Dave Bautista has been.
After it was announced that Gunn had been fired, Bautista said he would only act in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because of his contract.
The next day, after reports that Disney was planning on ditching Gunn’s script, Bautista threatened to quit the project if Disney went this route.
Even now that Disney plans on using Gunn’s script (for the most part), Bautista commented, “They’re putting the movie off – it’s on hold indefinitely – and, to be honest with you, I don’t know if I wanna work for Disney.”
6 Hope Is True: Nebula And Mantis Will Be Expanded
While Nebula was introduced in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Mantis was introduced in Vol. 2. Both characters are considered good guys at this point, but their future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still uncertain.
In an interview with Screen Rant, actress Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff sat down and talked about how their characters could possibly expand in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Klementieff said that she would like her character to visit Earth at some point and “go with the flow” without having Ego around anymore.
Gillan, on the other hand, thought it would be cool to share some screen time with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.
5 Hope Isn’t: Groot Will Be An Adult Again
In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot was depicted as a towering adult Floral Colossus. However, near the end of the film, he sacrifices himself to save his friends.
Groot, of course, is able to grow at an accelerated rate since he was shown as Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and a teenage Groot in Avengers: Infinity War.
Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place after Infinity War and Avengers 4, Groot could be an adult in the third film.
That being said, he was one of the ones that perished at the end of Infinity War, so if he came back, he could potentially be a baby again.
Baby Groot was one of the best parts of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so seeing more of the adorable little guy would probably please most fans.
4 Hope Is True: The Film Will Have An Awesome Mix Vol. 3
Peter Quill’s “Awesome Mixes” have been a great inclusion to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Not only do the songs perfectly match the scene, but each song defines Quill’s character just a little more. Each film has had their own Awesome Mix, but with the firing of James Gunn, the third movie could ditch this on-running detail of the films.
While it is unlikely that the third movie won’t have an Awesome Mix, nothing is for sure since Gunn is no longer directing.
Gunn had previously stated that the soundtrack had already “changed a lot,” but hopefully Disney doesn’t just completely scrap the idea.
3 Hope Isn’t: Kitty Pryde Will Be Introduced
At the beginning of the year, Fox announced that they would be working on a Kitty Pryde solo film. Pryde has the superpower of intangibility, which means that she can walk through physical matter.
Since Disney has bought out 20th Century Fox, the X-Men will more than likely be included in the MCU at some point.
That being said, there is a rumor that Kitty Pryde could be included in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
While it could be exciting to finally start integrating X-Men characters into the MCU, Vol. 3 probably isn’t the best movie to do it in since the film has been going through a lot of troubles as of late.
2 Hope Is True: Vincent D’Onofrio Will Join The Cast
Vincent D’Onofrio is one of the many actors who has asked for a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
D’Onofrio played Wilson Fisk in the TV show Daredevil, and while the Netflix shows don’t really connect to the MCU, they are still considered part of the Cinematic Universe.
D’Onofrio has done an amazing job playing Kingpin in Daredevil, so seeing him up on the big screen as a character in a Guardians of the Galaxy flick would be a treat for a lot of fans.
Even though the third movie is currently on indefinite hold, Vincent D’Onofrio would make a good addition to the cast if the film proceeds with production.
1 Hope Isn’t: Quasar Will Be Introduced
Quasar is an incredibly powerful hero who has the abilities of energy manipulation, teleportation, solid light constructs, and flight.
He would be an incredibly useful and interesting member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but he might not be the right choice for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Adam Warlock has already been teased in previous movies so fans are more than ready to see him on the big screen.
Including both Quasar and Adam Warlock in Vol. 3 could make the movie feel cramped, especially since the movie would feature an entire team of heroes already.
Quasar could be worth including in a future movie, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might not be the best choice.
