Amazon has ordered Wheel of Time to series. The show is an adaptation of Robert Jordan’s fantasy book series of the same name. Several of the books in the series have topped the New York Times Best Seller list. The popularity of Wheel of Time has led the series to be adapted into comic books and video games.
Since 2000, studios have been looking into bringing Wheel of Time to TV and film. Both NBC and Universal Studios have attempted to produce an adaptation of the series, but neither project ever went into production. Sony Pictures Television eventually acquired the rights to make a Wheel of Time TV series. Earlier this year, it was reported that Wheel of Time was in development at Amazon Studios, who was working on the project in conjunction with Sony. The series will air on Amazon’s streaming service.
According to TV Line, Wheel of Time has been ordered to series by Amazon with TV writer Rafe Judkins serving as executive producer and showrunner. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke says the “endlessly fascinating” book series “resonates with fans as one of the best-selling global properties” and goes to praise for focusing on “powerful women“. Amazon has released an official description for Wheel of Time:
The Wheel of Time is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Meaning that in this series — women hold the keys to power. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine’s interested in these five because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.
The description offers plenty of details on the new series and gives fans a taste of what the series will do differently than the novels. The protagonist of the novels was Rand al’Thor, while in the series, it will be Moiraine, the Aes Sedai who goes on a quest to find the legendary Dragon Reborn, the reincarnation of an immensely powerful being known as The Dragon. In the first book, Eye of the World, Rand was one of the three young men Moiraine believed could be the Dragon Reborn. The series will see Moiraine consider five potential candidates instead of three. Some of them are women, which is a notable deviation from the source material.
In the world of Wheel of Time, women are capable of mastering a form of energy called the One Power. Some men can use it to, but those who do eventually go insane. One in particular was The Dragon. He was the most destructive of them all, which means that if he were to be in reincarnated, the world would be in serious danger. For this reason, women trained in the One Power must seek out all men with access to the ability in hopes of finding the Dragon Reborn before it’s too late.
