Everyone is eagerly anticipating tonight’s Chiefs-Patriots game. While New England is favoured by a field goal or slightly better, the over/under for this contest is drawing a lot of attention. The total opened at 58½ but, expecting a shootout, bettors felt the number wasn’t high enough and they began loading up on the over. That has the marketplace sitting at 60 or slightly higher at some books. Anything above 60 would break the highest NFL betting total on record as a Christmas Day game in 2004 at Kansas City between the Raiders and Chiefs closed at exactly 60. That game had Oakland’s Kerry Collins taking on K.C.’s Trent Green (go figure), before the Chiefs emerged with a 31-30 victory, narrowly eclipsing the lofty closing number. Sportsbooks are reporting an 80/20 split with the score-loving public backing the over. As for the side, Kansas City has been perfect not only straight up, but it has also covered in all five of its victories. That won’t intimidate the Patriots, however, as Brady, Belichick and their boys have covered 16 of past 22 versus a team with a winning record.
Few would have foreseen the Bears spotting road points to almost any team in just the second week of October. However, after a 3-1 start and Chicago’s defence playing at an elite level, the Bears are giving 3½ points in Miami today. These ferocious Bears have been money makers recently when covering 5 of previous 6 regular season games but do note that the Dolphins have been profitable when cast as home underdogs, sporting a 6-2-1 against the spread record when taking points here in South Florida.
Have the Steelers righted their wobbly ship? More will be told today when they head to Cincinnati for a big AFC North contest. This will mark the 16th time since 2012 that Ben Roethlisberger will be an underdog when challenging a team above .500. In previous 15 attempts, Ben and the Steelers have won 10 of those games and have earned a 10-4-1 vs spread. Of the four failed covers, three of them were against the Patriots.
The Titans may not get many style points but they find ways to earn checkmarks, especially at Nissan Stadium. Tennessee is a perfect 5-0 against the spread in previous five played here and are on a current 4-0 run ATS as a home underdog. The Ravens are spotting their hosts three points this afternoon.
