The Toronto Wolfpack didn’t get the favour from the Widnes Vikings it hoped for.
With a win, or a loss of 13 points or less to Hull Kingston Rovers, the Vikings could have helped Toronto secure a place in the Super League for the 2019 season.
Instead Widnes made countless mistakes in a 30-0 loss to Hull KR on Sunday, returning the Rovers to English rugby league’s top tier.
The Wolfpack and its fans, many of whom listened intently to an online radio broadcast of the game, will be returning to Lamport Stadium this Sunday to host the London Broncos in the Million Pound Game (2 p.m.). The winner will get the final Super League spot.
Toronto defeated the Leeds Rhinos 17-16 on Friday to temporarily hold the third automatic spot.
Toronto, Hull, the Salford Red Devils, and Leeds all finished with a 5-2 record in the Super League Qualifiers, but Toronto had the lowest point differential.
Hull built a 14-0 lead after just 20 minutes against Widnes, which has been relegated back to the Championship with a 1-6 record.
