World Wide Web creator calls it ‘engine of inequity and division’

The creator of the World Wide Web wants to disown his child.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee — who created the technological marvel in 1989 — is slamming the internet as “an engine of inequity and division.”

Berners-Lee is finding that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

He created the web with the idea of sharing information that would be a boon to mankind. Instead, it has largely become “swayed by powerful forces who use it for their own agendas.”

Berners-Lee broke his silence in a blog post and said people are mistrustful of apps “that have an ulterior motive”.

“I’ve always believed the web is for everyone,” he wrote.

“That’s why I and others fight fiercely to protect it. The changes we’ve managed to bring have created a better and more connected world.

“But for all the good we’ve achieved, the web has evolved into an engine of inequity and division; swayed by powerful forces who use it for their own agendas.”

He added: “Today, I believe we’ve reached a critical tipping point, and that powerful change for the better is possible — and necessary.”
