47,500 Canadian flags planted at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre

Over 400 volunteers honoured Canadian veterans Saturday by helping to plant 47,500 Canadian flags covering the lawn surrounding  Sunnybrook Veterans Centre.

Some 100 flags were distributed amongst the 475 veterans who live on the grounds at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at the Operation Raise a Flag event.

The volunteers are people are from Cadets, Girl Guides, hockey teams, as well as the families of veterans.

The eighth-annual event took place for the first time during the day as Remembrance Day falls on a weekend.

The flag planting event was spread out over two groups and both were personally thanked by Second World War veteran and Sunnybrook Veterans Centre resident Stan Dinney, 96, in an auditorium presentation beforehand.

Dinney talked about how seeing all the flags reminded him of the sacrifices veterans have made, and how the sacrifices have kept our land free.

“Freedom is precious,” Dinney said.
