Avengers 4: How Endgame's Thanos Scarecrow Pays Homage to the Comics

The trailer for Avengers: Endgame has arrived. And while the surviving members of the Avengers are looking pretty unhappy at the moment, there’s one character in the new trailer who seems perfectly content. Thanos is briefly shown tilling the fields on his quiet farm, basking in the glory of having just murdered half of all life in the universe. And as he does so, the trailer features a shot of his old armor, now propped up as a bizarre sort of scarecrow.

It may seem strange to see one of the greatest villains in the MCU living the simple life. But as with most things in the MCU, this scene draws inspiration directly from the comics. Here’s why the “Thanos-crow” matters to the plot of the movie, and why it could hint at a shift in Thanos’ motivations going forward.
