Sister Act 3 is being developed for Disney’s streaming service, Disney Plus. The original Sister Act starred Whoopi Goldberg as a casino lounge singer who, after seeing a mob murder, is offered protection by the police and hides as a nun at a downtrodden Catholic parish. It went on to become a hit at the 1990 box office and ultimately got a sequel (titled Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit) three years later, as well as a stage musical adaptation in the mid-2000s.
Disney, which distributed the original film through its Buena Vista Pictures, eventually set work on remake for Disney Plus, in addition to a High Fidelity TV show starring Zoë Kravitz, and non-animated Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars series. Disney further intends to release films like Anna Kendrick’s Christmas comedy Noelle – which was originally slated to hit theaters – as exclusives through Disney Plus, instead.
All things considered, the Sister Act brand makes sense for Disney Plus’ family-friendly outlook. Of course, fans of the original films no doubt have mixed feelings about the property being revived – as do those who would rather see Disney focus on developing more original IPs for its streaming service, instead. Still, Sister Act 3 might be a better idea than a remake, especially if it leads to Goldberg covering “I Will Follow Him” in a movie again.
